Natural Erosion Control Matting
Biodegradable Coir Mats
Question: I am looking for natural erosion control matting. I need something that can work on a marina edge where there is likely to be some pedestrian traffic. The slope is likely to be almost level with a very small drop toward the marina. What is the longest lifespan of the mat that is offered?
Answer: For natural erosion control, a great choice can be the Biodegradable Coir Mat. These erosion control mats are made from natural coir materials that are designed to offer necessary control while slowly biodegrading over time. Typically, erosion control mats are offered in life spans of either six to nine (6-9) months, nine to twenty-four (9-24) months, or four to six years (4-6 yrs.).

Choosing an Erosion Control Coir Mat
In order to choose the erosion control mat that might work best for your location, there are several different factors you will want to take into consideration. The most common conditions you should consider include the following:
- Recommended Slope: In the technical specifications, each mat will include a recommended slope. This can be important if you are dealing with a particular steep slope (1:1) as you will want to make sure that your mat can handle the slope. Since you have mentioned that your area has a fairly level slope, you might consider mats with a recommended slope of 3:1.
- Recommended Flow: Also included for each mat is a recommended flow. Higher strength mats are typically used for higher flows. These flows have ranged from 6 fps to 17 fps.
- Lifespan: For erosion control, you can also consider the lifespan of an individual mat. A majority of the coir mats are designed to last from 4 to 6 years, while other lighter weight mats, such as straw or straw coconut blends, may last only 1 year.
- Strength: Each natural erosion control matting will additionally have some kind of tensile or weight strength. This can be important in determining how much weight the mat can withstand and still offer quality support.
